CULTURED MINDS
An Investigation of How Culture Affects Decision Making
WHY A WEBSITE?
More stimulating
Websites offer a whole new dimension of reader-information interaction. Not only can media (e.g pictures) be included, unlike a typical essay a webpage is dynamic. The reader is in charge of how they navigate, what they read, where to click. I believe this sense of agency makes the reader more attentive which means the large amounts of information is more easily digested.
Open Access
Over the course of my literature review, observing the lack of open access to scientific literature was disheartening. Google scholar and JSTOR were immensely helpful, nevertheless there remained many articles which I would have liked to access but couldn’t because I couldn’t pay $40 to access each script. I liked the idea that through a website ones work is open access for people all over the world.
Future Trend
I believe that as more and more people become proficient at using technology, they will turn to using websites as a mode for presenting information (for reasons mentioned above). The rise of e-learning and online tutoring is also furthering this trend with organisations such as Coursera and Khan Academy already using websites as learning platforms to present information persuasively. Websites are also more co-friendly since they convey information without using paper.
Experiment Data
I was very inspired by websites such as Lab in the Wild and Quiz my brain which use websites as platforms to host massive online experiments. My website design is informed using a number of simple tips from behavioural science, for example, the use of arrows to guide behaviour.
